Training Dogs To Wear Clothes
![]()
Dog clothes like creative dog costumes are great fun for you and your dog, if you do your homework well before trying to dress dog up!
Training your dog to wear clothes is really like any other training. Keep in mind that dressing your dog is your choice and your dog doesn’t see any benefit from having the clothes on. Since it isn’t fun for your dog to wear clothes you will need to reward him with treats or things he loves so he relates dog clothes to good things.
Training a puppy to let you dress them will be easier than training an adult big dog to accept being dressed. It’s not impossible to teach an older dog that wearing clothes means treats. Just stay with it and remember that if your dog hates the whole deal with dog clothes then don’t force it. Back off and keep it fun in mini training sessions.
Always start with something small and easy, like a cute dog shirt or vest with velcro. Make sure it fits well, not too tight and not so loose that the dog steps on it. If the shirt is a good fit, let your dog wear it around the house while eating, playing and naping. I don’t like leaving clothes on my dogs at night when I can’t see if they get caught in them or have a safety problem.
Give lots of upbeat praise so they get to know getting dressed is a good thing.
Some dogs will be great with hearing your words of praise and encouragment. Other dogs will get the message with a combination of your voice and loving pats and stroking.
Dog treats can be fed but don’t over do it with feeding treats. It’s good to use food at first but know when to leave them behind and replace with a scratch under the chin or chest rub.
If your dog hangs his head, tries to hide or fights you when you pull out the clothes, be gentle and soothing. If you can see that your dog really hates the clothes, don’t force him to wear them. Try a dog bandana to start with. Most dogs will accept a dog t shirt with ease so go back to a nice fitting t shirt before trying the biker leather jacket.
My favorite trick to get my dogs used to dog clothes was to dress them and take them to PetSmart or PetCo for new treats. I also took my Shelties to a nursing home for visits to my grandmother and the other residents. It was great fun and the residents got a kick out of the creative dog costumes.
With lots of practice and training your dog will be ready for the hottest dog halloween costumes.
Training your dog to wear clothing takes time, praise, love, and knowing when to stop. It takes the same things to train him to sit and walk on a leash. If wearing clothes is important for your dogs comfort and safety, you should devote as much time to clothes training as you have with all other training.
Halloween dog costumes and other unusual dog clothes are cute but make sure your dog is trained in advance to wear them.
