I first started using a dog treadmill for my pets when it was too cold to run them outside.  Minnesota winters can be harsh and the dogs don’t enjoy the bitter cold any more than I do.

Treadmills for dogs are easy for your dog to use and they will actually grow to love them.  They allow the same natural movement as walking or running outdoors. There are treadmills for dogs, some people feel they work the same as regular treadmills.  For safety I only use the treadmills for dogs. 

Training your dog to use a treadmill is simple and most dogs love it.  My dogs will scratch at the treadmill to get my attention so they can run on it.  It’s best to start out for a few minutes at a time.  Most dog treadmills are designed for your dog to be free standing so there’s no need for a harness or leash hung up. If you are using a human treadmill  first place a dog walking harness on your dog and clip a  leather dog leash to the dog harness. Using a harness with the leash attached easier to control your dog when you are in front of him/her and it doesn’t put stress on the neck.  Different treadmills will have different hook up designs so follow the instructions from the dog treadmill you purchase.  I’ve added some suggestions below for dog treadmills at resonable prices or bids below.

My dogs love the treadmill so I have to make sure they don’t overdo it.  I stay with them and listen and watch for signs of them getting tired, overheated or having an accident.  Accidents on treadmills for dogs can happen but if you stay with your dog and supervise him all will be good.

Start the treadmill at the lowest setting. You dog needs time to get used to the ground moving under his feet.  Stay in front of the machine so that you will be close to your dog.  Don’t leave your dog unsupervised on a treadmill.

Start training your dog on a treadmill with a few treats. Use a treat to get her on the treadmill.  Keep it fun but don’t make a huge deal out of it or you will make your dog too excited and she will not be able to focus on the treadmill.  Turn  the machine on low. Use treats to move your dog forward and keep a treat near his nose until he willingly moves forward with the machine. 

 Don’t overfeed the treats.  In a short time your dog won’t even need the treats and he will love his treadmill exercise.  Start out slow and progress up to an easy trot.   Do the training for 5 minutes a day and soon your dog won’t need treats.  Know your dog when figuring out how long he should exercise on the treadmill.
