Dog Gear For Hiking

I take my two dogs for hikes in the woods everyday.  Two years ago I bought two dog backpacks so I could take water and toys with us.  I also used the dog backpacks as a way to build the dog’s muscle while burning some fat.  I put dog drinking water bottles in them so the extra weight gave the dogs a little fat burning work out.

One thing to kep in mind when putting together the dog gear for hiking, the weight needs to balanced and should be placed over the dog’s shoulder blades instead of the back.  A  dog’s shoulders are built to carry weight, not the spine. 

The best dog backpack is a saddlebag type design. This will be much more comfortable for him. My dogs backpacks do not restrict their movement.  They backpacks stay in  place without the need of frequent adjustments.

 With the right size it will be easy to harness and place the straps on your dog so it’s comfortable and fun to use.

Collapsible bowl
Pick-up bags
Extra leash
Toys
Towels
Dog First Aid Kit

You might even put a nice reflective dog vest on your dog.  A vest is usually easy for your dog to get used to and it can help if you and your dog run into trouble in the woods.  Dog clothing isn’t just for the tiny dogs, it’s for protection and comfort with big dogs as well.

Consider getting a bright colored dog backpack so it stands out in the woods.  You wouldn’t want a hunter to mistake your dog for a game animal.

Make sure the material is at least somewhat water resistant if you are packing dog food in the saddlebags.  Make sure you wrap any food in plastic or place in plasic bowls.
